A model to predict nitrogen excretion from dairy cattle using the PDI protein system
نویسنده
چکیده
Introduction There is increased pressure on agriculture to reduce nitrogen (N) excretion from different production systems. In order to do so, it is of value to know how diets compare in terms of N excretion, as this could have both financial and environmental consequences. A mechanistic model describing the N digestion and metabolism in ruminants was developed from the PDI protein system to enable this comparison. The aims of the exercise were to develop a model that predicts the N excretion in urine and faeces of dairy and beef cattle, and to relate model predicted faecal and urinary N excretion to experimentally measured faecal and experimentally estimated urinary N excretion from grazing dairy cows.

Use of Milk or Blood Urea Nitrogen to Identify Feed Management Inefficiencies and Estimate Nitrogen Excretion by Dairy Cattle and Other Animals
The objective of this review is to describe recent research findings related to the use of milk or blood urea nitrogen to identify inefficiencies in protein nutrition and estimate nitrogen excretion. A mathematical model was developed to integrate milk urea nitrogen (MUN) and milk composition to predict urinary and fecal excretion, intake, and utilization efficiency for nitrogen in lactating da...
متن کاملEffect of Different Amounts of Protein and Varying Proportions of Corn Silage and Alfalfa Hay on Milk Production and Nitrogen Excretion of Dairy Holstein Cows
Four treatments were assigned to determine the effects of dietary potential digestible fiber (pdF) and crude protein (CP) levels in mid lactating Holstein cows on milk production and nitrogen efficiency. Sixteen primiparous (n=8) and multiparous (n=8) Holstein cows (body weight (BW)=546±72 kg; days in milk (DIM)=118±50 day) were allocated to one of four diets in balanced randomized complete des...
متن کاملEffect of Milk Urea Nitrogen of Dairy Cows in Relation to Breed
Milk urea nitrogen (MUN) of dairy cows was determined in relation to breed. A total of forty (40) Pabna and red Chittagong dairy cattle each of twenty (20) were selected to know the milk composition, nutritional status and milk urea nitrogen. Live weight of Pabna Cattle (187±14 kg) was higher than that of red Chittagong cattle (174±4 kg). In Pabna cattle milk yield (4.94 kg), minerals (0.15%) a...
متن کاملEvaluation of models to estimate urinary nitrogen and expected milk urea nitrogen.
Milk urea nitrogen (MUN) has been introduced as a means to estimate urinary nitrogen (N) excretion and protein status of dairy cattle. For Holstein cows, the amount of urinary N excreted (g/d) was originally reported to be 12.54 x MUN (mg/dl), but recently urinary N (g/d) was reported to equal 17.64 x MUN (mg/dl). The objectives of the present study were to evaluate models to predict urinary N ...
متن کاملLivestock Farming Systems and Cattle Production Orientation in Eastern High Plains of Algeria, Cattle Farming System in Algerian Semi-Arid Region
This study was an attempt to devise productive orientations of cattle herds in eastern high plains of Algeria. In this regard, 165 farms randomly identified were investigated. The selection of breeders was based to existence of cattle on the farm, and the farmer proposed to investigation must have at least two cows. The approach taken was to identify all systems adopted by farmers in a region t...
